The National Observatory in Athens 3D Print Model: This is a sculptural, yet exact, model of the National Observatory and of the Hill of the Nymphs in Athens, Greece, where it is located. Commissioned by NEON, for Adrián Villar Rojas “The Theater of Disappearance ” exhibition, it’s a large, 3d-printed plinth, depicting the state of the Hill of the Nymphs naked of all vegetation, in the state it was during the completion of the National Observatory, on 1846. The intended aesthetic was that of a bone white, cold structure, as if carved out of a single block of marble, frozen in time.

Decode Fab Lab was commissioned to produce the the ultra-high detail 3D digital model, consisting of upwards of 26 million polygons, was created through a combination of GPS data, photographs, scans and sketches and was printed on a high resolution bider jet printer. Great part of the effort was focused on accurately depicting the natural texture of the rocks, for which the appropriate custom height-maps where created.

The Theater of Disappearance is a major site-specific installation by celebrated Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas, commissioned and organized by NEON. The National Observatory Model is the sole exhibit placed inside the National Observatory building, with the rest of the exhibition covering the entire surface of the Hill of the Nymphs.
